Minimum Requirements

Like most of the other states across the nation, with a few exceptions, Wyoming requires car insurance to legally drive. The required coverages will protect you if an accident occurs and you are at fault. Here is a list of the coverages and the limits required:

Bodily Injury Liability Coverage $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
Property Damage Liability Coverage $20,000 per accident.

Do I Need More Than The Minimum Coverage?

We always encourage everyone to purchase as much car insurance as they can afford. The minimum required car insurance coverage in Wyoming is not the lowest in the nation but it isn’t adequate coverage if you cause an accident and have to buy someone a new car. There are additional coverages you can add to your policy or you can increase your policy limits. Both of these are a good idea to consider.

Additional Coverages Available

As we mentioned, adding additional coverages to your policy is a great way to ensure you are covered in a variety of scenarios. We provided a list of additional coverages here:

  • Collision Coverage- Collision insurance will cover repairs to your vehicle in an accident you are at fault for.

  • Comprehensive Coverage- Comprehensive insurance covers you for other situations than a car accident; if you hit an animal, vandalism, fire, hail, flooding, or of your car is stolen.

  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists- Optional coverage that protects you if you are involved in an accident with a driver who has no insurance or too little insurance to cover the accident.

  • Medical Coverage- Optional coverage that will pay for medical bills when health insurance exceeds coverage amounts and covers medical expenses for you and your passengers. Do you walk or bike? This policy offers additional coverage if you are struck by a car in those instances.

  • Gap Insurance- Optional coverage that will pay if you don’t own your car outright and have an accident. Gap insurance will pay the difference between the cash value of your car and the current balance on your loan or lease. This policy is best for newer non-owned cars.

  • Personal Injury Protection- Depending on your state this type of insurance can be a requirement or an add on. Regardless of fault personal injury protection will cover medical expenses and loss of wages for you and your passengers (up to your limit). It also includes up to $5,000 for funeral expenses.

Teen Drivers in Wyoming

Starting at the age of 15 your teen can get their permit in the state of Wyoming. This is the time to add your teen to a car insurance policy. It is not cheap to insure a teen driver period, but by adding them to your existing policy you can save money. Driving discounts are available for teen drivers, we recommend checking with your car insurance company to see what options are available.

Multiple Drivers in Wyoming

When chatting with your car insurance agent about drivers in your household it is important to list all drivers in your home. It is crucial to do this because it will prevent you from any unforeseen issues in the future, like loss of coverage.

If you want to exclude a driver in your home, you can do so. The excluded driver will not be covered by your car insurance policy when driving your car. If the excluded driver causes any damages while using your car you are responsible for any expenses, out-of-pocket. So we urge you to never let an excluded driver use your car.
