Minimum Requirements

Hawaii is a no-fault state meaning in the event of an accident you are responsible for the damages and injuries to your property and person. Complying with the state law and fulfilling the minimum requirement for car insurance is a safe start to provide protection for you. Here is the Hawaii minimum required car insurance break down:

Bodily Injury Liability Coverage $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident.
Property Damage Liability Coverage $10,000 per accident.
Personal Injury Protection Coverage $10,000 per accident.

                                                                                                                   OR

Managed Care (PPO)
  • $10,000 for immediate treatment after a car accident.

Do I Need More Than the Minimum Coverage?

More times than not the answer to this question is yes. Hawaii is a no-fault state meaning you file claims with your insurance company, not someone else's, regardless of fault. If you just have the minimum coverage you could be stuck paying for damages out of pocket. We always suggest buying the most car insurance you can afford. So yes, to have adequate coverage, having more car insurance than the required minimum is best.

Additional Coverages Available

Adding additional coverage can help protect your assets and put your mind at ease. Here is a list we compiled of additional car insurance coverages available:

  • Collision Coverage- Collision insurance will cover repairs to your vehicle in an accident you are at fault for.

  • Comprehensive Coverage- Comprehensive insurance covers you for other situations than a car accident; if you hit an animal, vandalism, fire, hail, flooding, or of your car is stolen.

  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists- Optional coverage that protects you if you are involved in an accident with a driver who has no insurance or too little insurance to cover the accident.

  • Medical Coverage- Optional coverage that will pay for medical bills when health insurance exceeds coverage amounts and covers medical expenses for you and your passengers. Do you walk or bike? This policy offers additional coverage if you are struck by a car in those instances.

  • Gap Insurance- Optional coverage that will pay if you don’t own your car outright and have an accident. Gap insurance will pay the difference between the cash value of your car and the current balance on your loan or lease. This policy is best for newer non-owned cars.

Teen Drivers in Hawaii

Hawaii uses a three-stage graduated license program for new drivers. At the age of 15 ½, a teen can begin the program by getting their permit. This means it is time to get an insurance policy in place. Adding a teen to your insurance or getting their own policy is going to cost a pretty penny. Teens are considered high-risk drivers because they lack the experience and have a high accident/claim rate. Teen drivers are held to the same car insurance minimums adult drivers are.

There are a few options out there to lessen the blow to your car insurance premiums. Check with your insurance agent to see what options they offer for teen drivers.

Do You Have Multiple Drivers in the House?

You wouldn’t want someone to drive your vehicle and not be covered by your insurance, right? If you have multiple drivers in your household it is best to disclose that to your insurance company. Typically your insurance premiums are based on the driver in the household that is the highest risk, maybe a teen or someone with a DUI.

However, if those premiums are too high, you can exclude anyone in the house from your car insurance. In the instance of excluding a driver, the insurance company will not cover any damages and you will be responsible for any damages incurred out-of-pocket

Penalties for Driving Without Car Insurance

Just like most other states, Hawaii will issue penalties for driving without the minimum required car insurance. It is cheaper and the best decision to comply with this law, it will save you so much money and the potential trip to jail. Here is a list of penalties for driving without insurance.:

  • First Offense: You will pay a fine of $500, do 75-100 hours of required community service, your driver's license will be suspended for three years or until you provide proof of insurance, and you will be required to file an SR-22.

  • Second and Subsequent Offense (within five years): You will pay a fine of $1500-$5000, do 200-275 hours of required community service, your driver's license will be suspended for one year or until you provide proof of insurance, and you will be required to file an SR-22. Your registration plates can be suspended or revoked and you can be sentenced to a maximum of 30 days in jail.
