Minimum Requirements

Washington DC requires car insurance for anyone driving and anyone who owns a vehicle. The minimum car insurance required in DC is a little more inclusive than the national average. These coverages will protect you in an at-fault accident or if you are in an accident with a driver who is not insured. Here is a list of the minimum required coverages and the limits:

Bodily Injury Liability Coverage $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
Property Damage Liability Coverage $25,000 per accident.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage $5,000 ($200 deductible).

Do I Need More Than The Minimum Coverage?

We always encourage buying as much car insurance as you can afford. You have the options to increase your minimum limits to a more substantial amount of coverage to ensure you will have almost no out-of-pocket costs. There are also additional coverages you can add for specific situations to round out your policy. If you decide to increase your premiums and add additional coverages it will give you peace of mind knowing you are covered.

Additional Coverages Available

If you are looking for specific coverage to meet your needs chances are there is an option for it. Adding additional coverage to your policy is the best way to ensure you are covered for a variety of scenarios. We provided a list of additional coverages and how they assist in protecting you:

  • Collision Coverage- Collision insurance will cover repairs to your vehicle in an accident you are at fault for.

  • Comprehensive Coverage- Comprehensive insurance covers you for other situations than a car accident; if you hit an animal, vandalism, fire, hail, flooding, or of your car is stolen.

  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists- Optional coverage that protects you if you are involved in an accident with a driver who has no insurance or too little insurance to cover the accident.

  • Medical Coverage- Optional coverage that will pay for medical bills when health insurance exceeds coverage amounts and covers medical expenses for you and your passengers. Do you walk or bike? This policy offers additional coverage if you are struck by a car in those instances.

  • Gap Insurance- Optional coverage that will pay if you don’t own your car outright and have an accident. Gap insurance will pay the difference between the cash value of your car and the current balance on your loan or lease. This policy is best for newer non-owned cars.

  • Personal Injury Protection- Depending on your state this type of insurance can be a requirement or an add on. Regardless of fault personal injury protection will cover medical expenses and loss of wages for you and your passengers (up to your limit). It also includes up to $5,000 for funeral expenses.

Teen Drivers in Washington DC

Washington DC allows teens to get their learners permit at 16. At this time the teen driver needs to be added to your car insurance policy or a car insurance policy of their own. The cheaper route is adding a teen to your existing policy. Whichever way a teen gets car insurance the premiums will be higher than older more experienced drivers. There are a few teen driving discount options, check with your car insurance company to see what they offer. It is important to understand teen drivers held to the same Washington DC minimum car insurance requirements that any adult is.

Multiple Drivers in Washington DC

When talking with your car insurance agent about multiple drivers in your house you need to list all drivers. It is important because it will prevent you from any unforeseen issues in the future. Issues could be as simple as learning at a later date you need to add the other drivers in your home or as extensive as loss of coverage.

If you want to exclude a driver in your home you can. The excluded driver will not be covered when driving your car. If the excluded driver causes any damages while using your car you are responsible for any expenses, out-of-pocket. So it is a good idea to never let an excluded driver use your vehicle.
